Stronger Futures Call to Action

The Stronger Futures debate in Parliament will resume 18th June. This gives us a few more weeks to voice our opposition to the introduction of the legislation.

The Stronger Futures legislation is a series of Bills that will determine what programs the Government implements for Indigenous communities for the next 10 years. The Bills are an extension of the Northern Territory Emergency Response Act 2007 (the Intervention), and will extend the discriminatory measures by up to a decade. If passed, some of the discriminatory measures that would be introduced through the Stronger Futures legislation include:

  • *suspension of social security payments for parents whose children do not attend school regularly;
  • *up to six months imprisonment for breaching alcohol bans in communities;
  • *a continued ban on the use of Indigenous customary law in bail and sentencing decisions; and
  • *income management programs to be extended to five new regions.

You can download the Call to Action Kit which includes: background material on the Stronger Futures legislation; advocacy strategies; information postcards to distribute; and a form letter to complete and send to politicians.

Best Start Action Plan

Hume Best Start Action Plan 2010-2014 Released

We are excited to announce the release of our Action Plan for 2010 - 2014 for the Hume region.

The Best Start objectives in Hume City are guided by the Victorian Government aims and objectives for Best Start. The aim of Best Start in 30 sites in Victoria is to improve the health, development, learning and well-being of all Victorian children from pregnancy through transition to school with the objectives of:
• Providing better access to child and family support, health services and early education;
• Improving the capacity and confidence of parents to be parents, and families to care for children and enjoy parenting; and
• Assisting communities to become more child and family friendly

The Family and Children’s Plan for Hume City provides the strategic framework for the planning and provision of services for children and families in Hume. The 2010 Best Start Action Plan has evolved from this plan as it seeks to promote a shared responsibility for action, including service system level change and improvements in Best Start indicators.

The full plan can be downloaded using the link below.

Report Released - The Voices of Children in Hume!

At the end of 2009, Communities for Children (CfC) consulted with children in the Broadmeadows area to better understand what is important to children of the City of Hume and what they want from their neighbourhoods. This project was a part of a larger community consultation to determine what community members and professionals perceived to be priority areas for the implementation of new CfC programs and activities in Hume. Sixty five children from a range of age groups in three local primary schools were consulted.

The following schools and classes took part:
  • Year 1/2 class from Campbellfield Heights Primary School
  • Year 3/4 class from Meadows Primary School
  • Year 6 from Dallas Primary School

Photovoice, a Participatory Action Research (PAR) method, was used to collect information and ideas from the children participating. Photovoice involves a group of people photographing issues and themes to form the basisof program, service and policy development (Wang & Burris, 1997). This method was selected because it allowed us to utilise photos to stimulate discussion and generate ideas from children about what they wanted from their neighbourhood and to identify their needs and priorities in a fun, active, and creative way.
